The sun shone bright for this year's middle school track and field meet on Friday, April 26, at Tamalpais High School. Our 6th, 7th, and 8th graders had been preparing for months to compete with Southern Marin schools, including Mill Valley Middle School, Del Mar Middle School, San Domenico, Mount Tamalpais School, and St Hilary's.

Led by coaches Joel Booth and Stevie Lee Jr., our Wildcats were energized and ready and captured wins across all of the events, including high jump, long jump, shot put, short and middle distance runs, and relay races. In fact, 25 of our athletes (that's one in every three students who competed) have qualified to move on to the Marin County Championships on Friday, May 3, at the College of Marin.
"It was one of our best years ever!" said Coach Joel. "We had first places in long jump, 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, high jump, shot put, and the 4x100 relay. Our students brought their real Marin Horizon spirit and made us all proud."
Every single student competed in at least one event.
Our Marin Horizon track and field program stands out for its inclusivity by encouraging every single one of our students to compete in at least one event. Many students participated in multiple events.
Said 6th Grader Cate Bostock, "I felt like I was going to die, but the sense of accomplishment was nice." Kate competed in the 600 meters, 1200 meters, and the long jump. She continued, "The 600 is one of the hardest because even though its short everyone sprints the whole thing."
Coach Joel explained, "We create opportunities for students to be able to shine, and we make sure that we take the pressure off. And we emphasize the fun and learning, and being part of a team, without worrying about their place on the finish line."
There was plenty to cheer about.
Our school spirit was on full display with posters and a sizeable cheering section of faculty, staff, and parents.
"It was great to see a lot of school spirit and all the students and parents supporting everyone," said Coach Stevie. "And also, during races, hearing our kids cheer on not only our school but cheering on other schools. It was great to witness that."
